Related Information

In the majority of cases, Ultrasound will be performed by a sonographer and in some instances a radiologist (doctor). If a procedure is being performed, you may be accompanied by a sonographer (providing the scanning) and a radiologist (doctor performing the procedure). Female sonographers are always on staff and can be requested when you place your booking.

Patients’ are generally required to change in to a gown and lie on the examination bed in the Ultrasound room. A gel is applied to the skin in the area of the body being studied. This enables the ultrasound probe to transmit and receive soundwaves effectively and provide clear pictures. Only the required amount of pressure to obtain clear pictures is used and generally ultrasound is completely painless.

Ultrasound scans last for approximately 30 minutes in the Ultrasound room. Other more technical studies such as Doppler (that is often used to image arteries and blood flow) can take longer as more information is captured. You will generally receive feedback about what is being visualised by the scan at the time (this does not include comments on diagnosis). If a procedure is being performed, such as an injection, the radiologist will likely provide feedback and information to help you understand what to expect and do after you time with us.

Western Radiology’s team of radiologists hold fellowships in Advanced body and Oncology imaging, Musculoskeletal radiology and intervention, and Neuroradiology. With such a depth of expertise, you can be confident that your scan will be reported expertly and your procedure handled with care and precision. Results and images are delivered electronically to your doctor within 24 hours of your scan.

If a patient requires an urgent Ultrasound for cases such as DVT or ectopic pregnancy for example, Western Radiology reserves time-slots for these that can be accessed on the same day within hours.
