National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP)

Australia’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) is a landmark public health initiative aimed at detecting lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages. Launching in July 2025, the program targets individuals at high risk of lung cancer, offering low-dose CT (LDCT) screening every two years. Early detection through screening has been shown to significantly reduce mortality by identifying cancers before symptoms appear. For more information, see this article in Medical Forum.

Who is Eligible?

Entry into the program is based on a risk assessment that considers smoking history and age. To be eligible, individuals must:

  • Be aged 50 to 70 years
  • Have a history of significant smoking exposure (measured in pack-years)
  • Be current or former smokers who quit within the past 10 years

Eligible participants are referred for a low-dose CT chest scan at an accredited imaging provider.

Related Information

Low Dose CT lung screening is a non-invasive scan that lasts for a relatively short time. The scan itself is done in seconds and no injection is required.

Prior to the scan, a CT radiographer will explain the procedure to you and get you changed into a gown. Patients place their arms back over their head, lie comfortably on the CT examination table and are required to follow breathing instructions for the scan. The total time for the preparation and scan time is usually only 10-15 minutes. Once the scan is completed you will be able to return to normal activities.

Delivered electronically to your referring physician generally within 24 hours of your scan, results and images are expertly reported by our radiologists with many years experience in their respective fields.
